China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment Led the Development of an AOAC International First Action Standard

Determination of Furan and Alkyl Furans in Infant Formula, Baby Foods, Fruit Juices, Cereals, and Coffee by Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HS/GC/MS)”, developed by China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) joint with Zhejiang Provincial Center For Disease Control and Prevention, became one of the First Action Official Methods after reviewed by the Expert Review Panel (ERP) of the Association of Official Analytical Collaboration (AOAC) INTERNATIONAL rendered on December 15, 2021.

Furans and furan derivatives are chemical contaminants that naturally form during thermal food processing. Furan was identified as an animal carcinogen and classified as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In 2018, risk assessment of furan and methyl furan in thermal-processed foods was listed as a priority assessment project supported by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. In order to achieve accurate detection in key foods, the working group developed a detection method for furan and alkyl furans to simultaneously determine furan and multiple alkyl furans in coffee, baby food, infant formula, cereals, and fruit juices funded by the National Key Research and Development Program of China (Grant No. 2018YFC1603600) and CIFST Food Science and Technology Fund – Abbott Food Nutrition and Safety Special Research Fund (Grant No. 201911003). The method has been recognized as the first action official method after reviewed by the ERP of the AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

This is the first international standard method led by CFSA, providing a Chinese technical solution for the collection of basic data on the risk assessment of furan and alkyl furans in thermal-processed foods worldwide.
